Hello fellow Tridonkeys,

I’m a beginner triathalete and I use those words lightly. I can barely swim and don’t own a bike. I borrowed a mountain bike from a friend and side stroked 800m to complete my first triathlon in Sept 08 and now I'm hooked. I need a beginner bike and need some advice. I don’t have much money and need the best bike for my buck, new or used. Where do I look for the best deal?

Trav dogg,

How much in not much?  IF you can spend 1500 or 2000 on a bike man there are some options.  The sad part is you need a decent bike if you want to compete but the good part is they last a long time and the engine is more important than the ride.  That said your local bike shops are the best deal.  where are you from?  By the way welcome to the fold little donkey.

I agree with nate dogg,  I am sure the pros would have no problem beating us on a mountain bike from 1987.  I bought a road bike first (because you can use it for regular riding, road racing, tri's, etc) and threw some areo bars on it for my first few seasons until I got really hooked,  aka saved up some dough.  but even then I bought a used tri bike from nate dogg when he upgraded to the full carbon rocket ship he calls his "little lady".  I am hoping to get my own rocket ship,  but times are tough,  so for now I am just rocking the aluminum flame wagon.   So my advice would be to get the more versitile road bike first,  and then upgrade to a tri bike (because if you are that serious you will want a road and a tri bike) at a later date.  But if you never go postal on the sport, you can always use a good ole road bike for saving the environment and getting places with a smile.

Another key is to find a triathlete who is more experienced than you,  and more importantly your size,  and buy all of his/her old stuff when they upgrade...

Welcome Travis donkey,  get ready for a fun ride.

Good advice, TD1.  In fact, Nate Dogg has an old tri bike he's looking to sell.  As do I.
